Has anyone else poked their head into Guild Wars?
I've been out of the loop for a while as I've not really had the money to waste on new games & monthly memberships considering how much I've not gotten to play in a while. Someone at work mentioned Guild Wars & I asked about the monthly price - as far as I know this is the only MMORPG out there with a fairly large following with no monthly fee.
I've already picked up a copy & gotten addicted.

Was looking into that game about a month ago, but after having read many of the msg boards about the game, I dont think it will be one in my collection.
Feel free to keep us updated specially 5-6months down the road, usually when you can determine if its a good MMORPG heh. WoW would prob still have to tank for me, just dont have the time for both.

I'm wondering what you heard about GuildWars...
Apparently I just hadn't gotten far enough in the game... I think it has a great storyline, the action is good, & grouping is about the same as what I remember in EQ1 (some are good, some bad).
Unfortunately it just gets harder & harder & even though henchmen are available they're dumber than doorknobs. Apparently the purpose of henchmen is to force you to actually group with real people - of course that's hoping the people you group with are all intelligent & none lose connection halfway through a mission.
Here's how bad the henchmen are - the healer being the worste... You'd think, being a healer, she'd stay at the back of the party & heal people... nope, I've had instances were she'll charge clear past me after I've engaged the enemy in hand-to-hand. I guess the strategy here is to keep moving all over the place - especially if it means she can pull more monsters for the party. The 2 characters I was playing with both had AoE attacks - Enchanter with something like hail of fire & my warrior with a whirlwind axe attack... Playing with players I can usually get most of the monsters on me - at which point I can dish some damage, but keep everything off the casters... It doesn't help the enchanter when you pull all of the monsters out of the AoE right after he's cast (it goes airborne & then rains fire).
Another frustrating moment with my tank was having the healer die on a narrow crevice... I wedged myself between her & the monsters so they couldn't get to her once I ressed her. If only she would have done her typical running away thing... Instead of healing herself (another typical thing with ressing her), right after getting ressed she charged the enemy, granted she couldn't get past me, but she got close enough they could take her out in about 2 hits.
I do have to say that the way they handle death is quite different than anything I've seen before. I also have to say at times I enjoyed the fact that I had a zone all to myself... however, at other times I wished for that wandering band of do-gooders to lend a helping hand.
At this point I have to say I've stopped as it just kept getting ridiculous... Not to mention I couldn't find a complete party with enough tactics to finish the missions... I also wasn't willing to go through missions 5 times before figuring out how to do them. Then again, maybe I'm just an old crusty & no fun because I don't like being required to do the same thing lots of times just to be able to keep up with the storyline.
That brings to mind my last point. It's nice to have a storyline of some sort as you can watch it unfold. It's also nice to be able to skip things or go backwards & repeat certain events (unless the journal really keeps track of **all** of the details)... but if the story is the only driving force in the game, it can get a bit tiresome & linear. EQ had a basic story to it, but you could keep to the story or go do your own thing.

I bought this game when it came out. However, I let my brother activate so he could fool around in there. He basically co-opted the 4 character slots that is allowed. I never even loaded on to my computer. Oh, well.
Leveling is not hard from what I heard. Completing quests is the hard part.
At least there are no monthly fees.
